ISLAMIC FRONTIERS OF CHINA
PEOPLES OF THE SILK ROAD
Wong How Man, Adel Awni Dajani
I.B.Tauris Publishers, 2010
ISBN 978-1-84885-702-5
There are over twenty million Muslims in China today. From the mountainous borders with Afghanistan to the tropical island of Hainan, the ethnicities and cultures of China’s Muslims are as diverse as China herself. They come from at least ten different ethnic groups, including the Persianate Tajiks in the Pamir Mountains, Kirgiz eagle hunters in the west, and the Chinese speaking Hui living in Canton. In recent years the world’s attention has been drawn to the clashes between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese in Xinjiang Province. But how does a Muslim minority in the People’s Republic of China live today? After decades of communist rule, and now under the onslaught of commerce and consumerism, what pressures do the different communities and their heritages face? Wong How Man, a renowned Chinese explorer and Adel Awni Dajani, with his Muslim background, come together to explore the regions of the Asian borderlands where the traditions of Islam and China interact. Their collaboration has resulted in this lavishly illustrated book which gives us a glimpse of the rich diversity of life on the Islamic frontiers of China.

FROM MANCHURIA TO TIBET
Wong How Man
Odyssey Publishing, 1998
ISBN 962-217-098-6
This book chronicles a quarter century of explorer Wong How Man’s Inner Asian expeditions, providing a rare glimpse of ethnic groups whose lives and customs mirror the enchanting yet sometimes brutal environments in which they live. Here in the hinterlands of Asia, from Manchuria and Mongolia to the Silk Road and Tibetan Plateau, traditions carry on as they have for centuries as modernization slowly makes its way to what Wong calls the ‘Backyard of Asia’. “From Manchuria to Tibet” transcends political boundaries to focus on the diversity and interconnectedness of unique peoples in beautifully unusual landscapes. More than a photo essay, this publication delves into the history, traditions, stories and dreams of colorful indigenous peoples and their surroundings, often in formidable terrain. The author has spent 25 years focused on these remote areas of Inner Asia, where few foreigners tread. He has recorded the last of many vanishing traditions among these ethnic minorities, who have lived bravely in the challenging environment around them.

Wong How Man
Odyssey Productions Ltd., 1989
ISBN 962-217-092-4
Flowing over 6,400 kilometers from its narrow source high up in the Tibetan plateau to its 30-kilometer-wide mouth at Shanghai, the mighty Yangtze directly affects the lives of over 300,000,000 Chinese. Renowned explorer and photojournalist Wong How Man journeys upstream over an 18-month period to find the true source of this powerful river. His discovery now makes the Yangtze possibly the second longest river in the world. And his colorful observations of the diverse ethnic groups and wildlife he encounters along the way prove invaluable in understanding this source of Chinese civilization, past and present.

ISLAMIC FRONTIERS OF CHINA
SILK ROAD IMAGES
Wong How Man, Adel A. Dajani
Scorpion Publishing Ltd., 1990
ISBN 0-905906-83-7
References to the very extent of China and the huge size of its population are often clichéd. However, this work with its dramatic and powerful photographs is concerned with an area of China that has remained obscured and little known. Along the long northern marches of China are groups of non-ethnic Chinese, numbering many millions, who have managed to preserve their Islamic traditions. These peoples are related to other nomadic groups of Central Asia across the Chinese border and now in the Soviet Union, Afghanistan, and even Pakistan. In order to study these groups in such sensitive areas, special permits were granted to the authors. Months of intensive fieldwork in difficult terrain, followed by a long period of further research, produced an exceptional photographic record, showing ruined cities of the Silk Road, mosques, veiled women, bazaars, falconry, arts and crafts, a document on the life and times of these peoples. In this area Islam has survived for some thirteen centuries. This book acts as a bridge between the great land of China and Muslims throughout the world.

BLACK-NECKED CRANE
RENDEZVOUS
Wong How Man
Commonwealth Publishing Group, 2002
ISBN 986-417-046-5
This book is based on long years of observation and field work on the Black-necked Crane, one of the rarest crane species in the world. Since 1988, Wong has focused on the stately and endangered bird. From the breeding ground on the Tibetan plateau, to the wintering sites in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, Wong made numerous trips which chronicle the state of the Black-necked Crane. The many photographs illustrate the result of this work, as the bird spring back from endangered status to a more healthy population. An accompanying DVD is also made with the publication of this bilingual title, in Chinese and English.
