TRANS-BORDER WILD SHEEP
Western China’s Xinjiang region borders seven countries. CERS has commenced study of several of Xinjiang’s endangered wild sheep in an effort to promote conservation and friendly cooperation among these neighboring countries. A survey has been conducted on the Marco Polo Sheep, which have the most coveted horns in the Pamirs or “Roof of the World” — the region in which China borders Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Argali Sheep has been studied along the China-Kazakhstan frontier, and the Ibex has been studied in both the Pamirs, and along the border with Mongolia. Where as the Blue Sheep has been studied along the entire range of the Himalayas.
